Mount Maunganui, October 8, 2026 — Lawter NZ today announced the decision to close its Mount Maunganui manufacturing facility, with the closure expected to affect 39 employees. The closure will be phased in over the next 18 months, with the first phase expected to take effect from February 1 2027 and closure on April 30th, 2028.
The decision follows a detailed review of the plant’s ongoing viability in the face of sustained commercial pressures, including steep increases in utility costs, continued strain on supply chains and raw material availability, and a highly competitive market. These factors have significantly increased the cost of operating the facility and placed considerable pressure on the plant’s ability to remain commercially sustainable.
The decision to close the facility has not been made lightly. The plant and its employees have made an important contribution to Lawter NZ over many years, and the company recognises the significant impact the closure will have on employees, their families, customers, suppliers and the broader local community.
Lawter NZ has consulted with affected employees and will continue to support them through the transition. The company is committed to meeting its obligations to employees and providing appropriate information and assistance throughout the closure process.
The company is also working with customers and suppliers to manage the transition as responsibly as possible and minimise disruption to their operations.
Mikio Katayama, CEO, said:
“This is an extremely difficult decision and one that we have not taken lightly. Our employees have made a significant contribution to the business, and we deeply appreciate their commitment and dedication.
“Unfortunately, the combination of very high utility costs, ongoing supply chain and raw material pressures and intense competition has made it increasingly difficult for the plant to operate on a sustainable basis.
“We understand the impact this decision will have on our employees, customers, suppliers and the local community. Our priority now is to manage the closure responsibly and respectfully and to support our employees through this difficult transition.
“We are grateful to everyone who has supported the plant and our business over the years.”
Lawter NZ will continue to communicate directly with affected employees, customers, suppliers and other stakeholders as the closure process progresses.
